Junie B. & Tubas

We had a delightful day today.

image_54.jpgFirst, we went to a Theatreworks production of Junie B. Jones.  JediBoy is a huge fan of the Junie B. books and BabyGirl is a huge fan of any stage show, especially where music is involved, so they were a perfect audience.  The hour long production was cute & musical and we enjoyed it.  Of course, after the production, JediBoy dissected it and told me what didn’t follow the books!  We had a nice critical discussion of the show.

After the show, we decided to go to the mall to shop for PisecoDad’s birthday (on Thursday).  The kids had a great time racing up and down the mall and looking at used video games.  As we were getting ready to head out, we noticed a local high school band setting up for a performance – apparently this is Music in the Schools Month.  We sat down on a bench to watch them set up, warm up, tune up & finally play.  Lots of good discussions about bands, school music classes and the various instruments.

A long time passed as we watched them in silence.  Then JediBoy leaned over to me and told me, “The instruments I’m really watching are the organ, the big bass drum and the tuba.  I’d like to play one of those.

(It was a rack of chimes, not a pipe organ, but I thought it was a good educated guess based on the pipes he could see.)

212159_brass_images.jpgThe reason that threw me was that he had basically chosen the three instruments we don’t own!  Piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, alto clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone & snare drum are all in our family’s collection.  Tuba?  He wants to play the tuba?

He actually asked me later why we don’t have a tuba!  So I had to talk about the cost of new tubas & the way most schools own their own tubas that they loan out to the students, and so very few students own their own tubas, which means I’ve never seen one at an auction, thrift store or yard sale.

Though.

I would buy one if I could.

Wonder where he gets that from?

Wow! What a wealth of musical talent you must have in your family. :-)

There used to be (mumble 25 years ago) a used musical instrument store in downtown B-town. They would have been a place to have had them.

And I know Zizzi’s (sp?) on the parkway might rent them – if it also exists. Mr. Zizzi was a friend of my parents, so he’s probably long gone toooooooo.

    I’m old.

BTW, my step-sister in town is a music teacher, I can ask her where to find one these days.
