Muffin Tin Monday: Blue and Purple

This week’s theme for Muffin Tin Monday was BLUE AND PURPLE.  There are a lot of jokes out there about why humans don’t eat blue food…including from Erma Bombeck:

There is no known navy blue food. If there is navy blue food in the refrigerator, it signifies death.

…and George Carlin:

I often wonder why there’s no blue food. Every other color in well represented in the food kingdom. And don’t bother me with blueberries; they’re purple. The same is true with blue corn and blue potatoes. They’re purple. Blue cheese? Nice try. It’s actually white cheese with blue mold. Occasionally, you might run across some blue Jell-o in a cafeteria. Don’t eat it. It wasn’t supposed to be blue. Something went wrong.

When I was about 10, our family had a running joke about how no foods are blue.  So putting together this Blue/Purple tin was very entertaining for me!

Our tin had: blue corn chips, purple jelly beans, purple grapes, blueberries, bleu cheese and eggplant.  We also had Purple Cows to go with our lunch.

No, my kids aren’t fans of bleu cheese or eggplant, but those were two things that JediBoy specifically requested when I started making a list for this tray.  He actually likes bleu cheese, in small doses, but neither of them were thrilled with the eggplant, even though I’d cooked it in a little oil and sprinkled it with cheese.  I think most kids like the idea of eggplant a lot better than the actual food!

Purple Cows are a treat I remembered from my childhood.  They are just vanilla milkshakes made with purple grape juice in place of some of the milk.  Yummy!

This week’s Muffin Tin Monday is being hosted at Junior Mints and Reeses… so head over there to see some more blue food!
