Learning Notes: January 12-18, 2009

As usual, there is no typical week around here!  This week found us struggling to push a car out of the driveway first thing Monday morning, and me struggling with migraines later in the week.  In between, we had plenty of fun and talked about plenty of interesting things.  You can read in greater detail about Monday and Wednesday, in case you missed those posts.

If you’re interested, you can find the week’s learning notes behind the cut.

Reading, Writing & Spelling

Math

I had less planned out this week for math and so, as often happens, less interesting math got done.

stretching:

  • Math-U-See Gamma, dvd segment for lesson 11 and page 11A (skip counting by 3)
  • pages 11B and C
  • pages 11D and E
  • page 11F and test 11

katas:

  • Touch & Win Multiplication game, at least once daily (multiplication; facts and patterns)
  • 100 Stars game (addition)
  • Sum Swamp Addition and Subtraction Game (addition and subtraction; combining to make a desired outcome)
  • Ten Rolls Race game (addition – polyhedral dice)

technique:

History

  • The Story of the World: Volume 1, Chapter 22, 23 and 24: Athens and Sparta, Greek Myths, and Wars of the Greeks
  • Mom read all of the chapters aloud; JediBoy answered the review questions and narrated.
  • We read D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths together.
  • We watched Disney’s Hercules – and discussed how it differs from the mythology.
  • Looked up historical information online about the Vikings.

Science

  • We continued to discuss the weather, including, in particular, the computation of wind chill.
  • As PisecoDad’s car was stuck in the snow, we discussed snow, ice, salt, sand, traction, melting points, inertia, gravity, engine weight, front-wheel drive, etc.
  • We looked at weather maps on the computer and talked about each day’s predictions.

Misc.

  • Played with snow white playdough and made lots of playdough snowmen.
  • Played outside in the snow almost every day.  Friday was way too cold, though.
  • Worked on making a nice tone on the recorder.
  • Soccer practice on Monday and game on Saturday.
  • Karate class on Tuesday – missed class on Thursday.
  • Enjoyed Muffin Tin Monday – with a Royal theme.
  • Went to the bookstore with Paula and Ben on Friday.
  • Read a lot, including many Magic Tree House books and the SOTW text for fun, independent reading.
  • Played the games In a Pickle and Rack-o, as well as Pokemon Monopoly and Cranium Balloon Lagoon.
  • Had a dental cleaning on Monday; lost a tooth on Thursday.  Swears the two were not related!  Lots of talking about dental hygiene and the process of losing and growing teeth.
