Learning Notes: November 17-23, 2008
Again, we failed to have a typical week! What are those, anyway? Monday we were away from home, Tuesday and Wednesday I was grumpy and doing the minimum, Thursday was pretty normal and then Friday was wiped out by a stomach bug. We did manage to sneak in some fun things anyway!
If you’re interested, you can find my summary of the week’s learning notes behind the cut.
Math
- Math-U-See Gamma – continued to work on Lesson 6, which is the x5 multiplication facts; did one evening of work with PisecoDad and page 6B from the book; practiced daily with Mom, usually playing catch and calling out the answers; is quite good at 0-5 and 9-10 but sticks a bit at 6-8.
- learned to play Yahtzee and loved it without commenting on the fact that this game involves a great deal of adding – including adding several of the same number (aka multiplying) and adding a column of two-digit numbers
History
- The Story of the World Volume 1: Chapter 19: The Early Greeks – reading and review questions
- map work on Greece
- read from The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia about the early Greeks
Science
- read The First Thanksgiving, talked about Squanto – he also told me more that he knew about Squanto from the Magic Tree House book Thanksgiving on Thursday – and planted 12 lima beans, 3 in each of 4 cups (shh! that’s multiplication!), marked two for plain water and two for “fish water” (water mixed with emulsified fish fertilizer – not as smelly as actual fish heads) and predicted what would happen – checked daily but they haven’t sprouted yet
Language Arts
- read aloud quite a bit more than usual, mostly to BabyGirl
- played several impromptu word games, including the invention of the “Green Gummi Song” (“One green gummi, it looked like a log / One green gummi that I fed to my… [dog!]“)
- went to a reading & book signing featuring author/illustrator Matt McElligott. JediBoy wished he could have attended the book-making workshop held that afternoon for grades 4 and up. “But I can read 4th grade books, Mom!”
Spanish
- watched the dvds for Muzzy level two for the first time – Spanish audio with no subtitles because he’d lost the dvd remote!
- listened to the Muzzy audio in the van on the way to & from Heather’s house on Monday
Fitness & Health
- went to basketball practice on Wednesday
- practiced his white belt katas daily
- went to karate on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
- visited the allergist on Tuesday; got new prescriptions and talked about how they will help his body
- had a stomach bug on Thursday night into Friday morning; talked again about the transmission of germs!
Misc.
- played with Jamie and Ben on Monday and enjoyed sharing Muffin Tin Monday with them
- watched The Princess Bride on Monday evening
- made symmetrical push paintings (drip the paint, fold the paper, smush, open)
- played several board games including Yahtzee and Niagara
- watched movies while he was sick, including a dvd of Sagwa, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney version) and the first Harry Potter movie
- learned to “finger crochet“; after making several green vines, he told me, “If we had some brown yarn, I could make a new whip for C. [friend who loves Indiana Jones] and that whip wouldn’t break.” Went to the store, bought brown yarn and made the gift!
- went to C’s gymnastics birthday party on Sunday
Reading
- JediBoy read lots of books this week, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday when I needed some time by myself – he read over 150 books from the living room shelves on those two days alone. He also read lots on the other days, and finished a Junie B. Jones book while riding in the cart in the time it took me to shop and pick up his prescriptions at the store.
