Learning Notes: November 3-9, 2008

I feel like our learning times are in a time of transition this month. This week, we finished something major (a math level) and found a new, fun workbook to replace his beloved Classic Stories book. We also picked up a used copy of the BBC’s Spanish course, Muzzy, and started watching that.

If you’re interested, you can find my summary of the week’s learning notes behind the cut.

Math

  • Math-U-See Beta, Lessons 29 and 30: Reading Gauges and Thermometers, Bar Graphs and Line Graphs; watching the dvd, doing several practice problems and the test for each lesson. He finished Beta!
  • a variety of worksheets from a new book - Flash Kids G&T Grade 3 Reading, Writing & Math - focusing on number sense, rounding, and a computation puzzle - he enjoys these sheets as they are illustrated, in color & presented as fun puzzles

History

  • The Story of the World Volume 1: Chapter 16: The Return of Assyria, and Chapter 17: Babylon Takes Over Again - reading and review questions
  • map work SP47 - Nineveh and Assyria, and SP49 - Babylon and Nineveh
  • read from The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia on Assyria and Babylon
  • drew the Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • made an Assyrian siege engine from Legos!

Nov 03 Assyrian Siege Engine

Science

  • This week, science slipped through the cracks a bit - except that we did talk about the aerodynamics of a basketball, the process of turning iron ore into chain mail, and enjoyed a day-long study of animals and their behavior at the zoo - you know, the daily-life science we all learn & love.

Language Arts

  • a variety of worksheets from his new book - Flash Kids G&T Grade 3 Reading, Writing & Math - focusing on synonyms, antonyms, and words with more than one meaning; nouns, verbs, adjectives and compete sentences - he enjoys these sheets as they are illustrated, in color & presented as fun puzzles; he liked illustrating antonyms and doing a mini Mad Lib

Spanish

  • watched the dvds for Muzzy level one - Spanish audio with English subtitles. He says this is one of his new favorite movies and watched it once each day!
  • listened to the Muzzy audio in the van

Fitness & Health

  • went to basketball practice on Wednesday and had a basketball game on Saturday
  • practiced his white belt katas daily
  • went to karate on Tuesday afternoon

Misc.

Reading

  • JediBoy read lots of books on including:
  • all of his Magic Tree House books, several more than once - these are his current books of choice for reading during meals or snacks
  • Stuart Little, again, and a nice Jan Pienkowski collection The Fairy Tales several times
  • read aloud to BabyGirl a few new readers in the Joselina Piggy series :)
  • greatly enjoyed a new picture book called Mucumber McGee and the Half-Eaten Hot Dog

Responses

Hey there. I was stopping over to follow up and see if you received the stacked Halloween bow that I sent you as part of the giveaway I did last month.

I meant to follow up sooner, but forgot. I was looking through my blog posts and noticed the one where I posted you as the winner and that reminded me!

Please let me know!
