Don’t Worry, She’s Talking

From Kids Health:

From 18 to 24 Months
Kids should have a vocabulary of about 20 words by 18 months and 50 or more partial words by the time they turn 2. By age 2, kids should be learning to combine two words, such as “baby crying” or “Daddy big.” A 2-year-old should also be able to follow two-step commands (such as “Please pick up the toy and bring me your cup”).

Oct 08 Upside Down

Oct. 20, 2008 - after 11 months in Guatemala and a full year in the US, BabyGirl says the following words (those with an asterisk are clearly enunciated - the others might not be understood outside our family):

Mommy*, Daddy*, [her brother’s name], brother, Emily, Nate*, Anna, Leigh, Dave*, Ben, Paula, Robin, Mark, Jer, Andrew, Jamie, Aidan, Pappy, Grandma

light, hot, diaper, wipes, apple*, eat*, yummy, meal*, milk, bottle, chip, cereal, pizza, hot dog, bite, juice, plate, cup, cheese, gum*, burp, all done, more, out*, stop, help, book, night-night*, uh-oh*, ow, Dora, Diego, Elmo*, drop, mail*, home, box, ball*, swing, wait, sit, up, down, on, bird, dog, cat, tiger, block, no*, don’t, pretty, nose, mouth, ear, belly, bum, eye*, arm*, ankle, baby*, me*, sock, shoe, bubbles, blanket, bed, bye*, hello, hi*, song, again, happy*, please, thank you, yucky, wash, tv, dvd, watch, ABC’s, game

So, she has at least 100 “partial words” and she does combine them (the most common two-word phrase is “Daddy home?”). She can also follow two-step commands easily (if she’s in the mood to cooperate!). She also continues to sign “eat,” “drink,” “more” and “please.” The other signs have largely fallen away from disuse. She can (and will) imitate lots of other words and sounds, including singing songs, naming colors and letters, and trying to say “TaeKyoKu ShoDan” with JediBoy at karate.

I have to consciously not worry about her speech. JediBoy was an early talker and had many signs, with approximately 64 partial words and 30 signs at 16 months, and had a larger vocabulary than we could count at 2, which I know is not typical. I know that it is common to have delayed speech after an international adoption, but because she’s so different from JediBoy, some days I worry. Some days, it just helps me to see in black and white that she’s fine, and so today I counted her words. Don’t worry, she’s talking - enough.

She’s also pretty good at mun-munk, sorry and WOW. I’m glad the list makes you feel better. She’s an excellent communicator, no matter how many words she may have at her ohhh so advanced (wink) age.

If it makes you feel better, my 17 month old little guy says barely any! He says catch, cat… signs and says gah for bird, and says bye bye by signing and saying dada, which sounds nothing like bye bye! :) He’s number 4 and every one has been different. My first baby started talking at 5 months and was super verbal, the second waited a bit longer but started out with sentences, and the third was later but still more verbal than Alex is. I just was talking about this with my hubby yesterday and he said he thinks Alex is just fine. That’s the way I’m leaning too.

Sounds to me like she’s doing great! That’s quite a list! :)
