Learning Notes: September 29 - October 5, 2008

We’re wrapping up a week that was full of good times with friends, saying “so long” to Leigh’s family as they leave for six months, starting karate, going to a birthday party and all kinds of other adventures. Lots was learned, in lots of ways. I’ve decided to try and start posting these on Sunday evening (when I’m usually typing up my notes) since I seem to find so much else to blog about on Mondays.

If you’re interested, you can find my summary of the week’s learning notes behind the cut.

Math

  • Math-U-See Beta, Lessons 16, 17 and 18 - Thousands and Place Value, Rounding and Estimating Thousands, and Multiple Digit Column Addition (which he loved, of course!) - watching the dvd, doing one practice page and then the test for each lesson

Reading

  • JediBoy had another heavy reading week. On the one hand, I’m thrilled that he now shelves his books immediately after reading them - it makes cleaning up a lot easier for me. On the other, it makes it harder for me to assuage my burning curiosity about what he’s read on any given day. I snagged a few peeks, and he’d read all of our Dora books (about two dozen titles), almost all of our Berenstain Bear books (roughly three dozen titles), and all of our Maisy books (a dozen - most of these aloud to BabyGirl) on one day. He read a big pile of readers in the playroom (probably about 20) and at least half of his King Arthur/castle books in the nursery (another 10-12) another day. Then he read through a bagfull of “fluff” - movie storybooks and tv tie-ins that I was trying to declutter away from the house - on a different morning. He’s been reading the Steven Kellogg anthology we have at bedtime as well as several joke books throughout the day and the Disney Spanish Picture Dictionary too.

You amaze me with all you do. Your schedule is always so much fuller than mine and I struggle to get done all of our stuff. You are amazing. I am glad that you had a good week.

You are so in your element being with your kids and homeschooling- your enthusiasm and passion are so natural. That’s one of the reasons you’re an inspiration to me! Thank you for sharing the way you organize things.
