Our Little Pigs

I finished my little pig project by applying the last coat of matte sealant this morning, and the kids have been having a great time playing with the set so far. I’ve been reading the different versions aloud as they act out the story. They both love blowing down the houses!

This is our set. I made three pigs and a wolf, blocks for the straw, sticks and bricks, and painted a small wooden bowl to hold everything. The small underlay is half a sheet of green fleece.

Here is our first little pig with his house of straw. All of the bits are wood pieces that I picked up at the craft store yesterday. The pigs (Boy Game Piece 1-11/16″) are painted with store-brand pink acrylic paint. The straw house is made from just two blocks (Design Bar 3″) painted dark yellow.

Our second little pig and his house of sticks. The three blocks for sticks are painted golden brown, and the wolf (Girl Game Piece 2″) is painted golden brown too. I used black paint and a toothpick to add my details. (Okay, I smudged the black into the wolf’s fur with my finger. But a toothpick sounds classier.)

Our third little pig inside his house of bricks. The brick house is made from four blocks, daringly painted with brick red. We decided to make each house a little bigger, both to accommodate fleeing pigs in the pigs-flee-are-not-eaten versions and also to make each house take a little longer to build and be a little sturdier. JediBoy likes to build the brick house low like this so he can’t blow it down.

Here is what the set looks like, packed up in our little bowl. Ready for next time!

That’s awesome. Do you get annoyed when I copy your ideas, cause if you don’t, I’ll probably get the bits and bobs and make a set for Anna.

I was just thinking today that I want to set up a whole bunch of Montessori-style bowls and trays for her while we’re in White Plains and I’m close to shopping.

How cool! I keep meaning to make some Montessori story baskets for my kids at home, but I never do! I love this one.
