Ever since the day I saw these sand molds on My Mom Shops, I knew we had to have them. The problem was that mymomshops herself thought these were only available from French store FNAC. I did a few quick searches that night before bed, trying to find them in the US, but I struck out. So I sent out a quick email at 9:30 asking PisecoSis for help, she put the word out on her LJ, and by 10:35 I had an email reply with the website for Discount School Supply. And I ordered these darling, marvelous molds.
Sand molds of an Egyptian pyramid, the Acropolis, a Mayan step pyramid, the Coliseum, and the Taj Mahal. Too cool!
They arrived today, and JediBoy and I took them up the hill to the park with the BIG sand box.
The Taj Mahal and the step pyramid were tricky, because of their little pointy bits. The park sandbox has a high roof and the sand is extremely dry, but we toted along a jug of water to help the sand take shape. I just love these, though, don’t you?
After we had been playing for about fifteen minutes, four older girls (ranging from about 10-14) came to play at the sandbox. It only took a few minutes for the girls to realize how much fun we were having, and soon we were all constructing a giant city of pyramids and Taj Mahals together and chatting. As JediBoy got wound up talking about the pyramids at Giza and Khufu and mummification practices, I got the look and the question: “How OLD is he?” They were all amazed that he knew so much about Egypt at six. The conversation continued, with the girls trying (but unable) to stump him. The ten-year-old girl repeatedly said, “Wow! I feel so dumb now!” and JediBoy constantly replied, “You’re not dumb!” We went on to talk about how homeschooling allows us to study one subject very deeply, and that while he knows a lot about Egypt, there are plenty of things he hasn’t even heard of yet. And he can’t do monkey bars. This made our new 10-year-old friend very happy and she and JediBoy took off for the jungle gym.
