Nature Window Pictures (they’re Sticky too!)

This spring, JediBoy and I have been revisiting many of our old favorite crafts, things that got pushed to the side in the chaos that was PGN and traveling to Guatemala, and then adding a whole new being to our family.

Today it was Nature Window Pictures. An incredibly easy and fun project, nature window pictures are nothing more than items from our yard sandwiched between layers of clear Contact paper. We started making the first one together and his eyes lit up. “I think we used to do this before!”

It’s simple to do: cut a sheet from a roll of Contact paper and fold it in half. Peel off half the backing to reveal the sticky side of half the sheet. Lay leaves, tiny twigs, grass, flower petals, maple seeds, or any other tiny items on the sticky paper. Then pull the backing off the other side and fold the paper in half, pressing the natural wonders between two layers of Contact paper. You can trim the edges or make a simple construction paper frame, and then hang it in your window for long-term beauty.

We used to make these at least once a week, and today JediBoy was so delighted with the project that he made three different pictures and didn’t want to stop when BabyGirl woke up from her nap and interrupted us. I guess Contact paper goes into heavy rotation on my shopping list again! Here are his three masterpieces from today:

We must do this soon here. *checking cupboard for contact paper*

We haven’t done this in ages.

Thank you for the reminder.

That is SO cool!

Thanks for your comment! And how funny…we did the contact paper nature thing last week, before we had a sticky theme! My little girl loves sticking anything to contact paper. And gathering the leaves was way fun.

I’ll have to get some clear contact paper and try this. We have done it with wax paper, but the results were a bit disappointing. Wax paper doesn’t seem to iron like I remember it!

RE: Your comment on my blog…

Forgot to answer your question…we got our cornstarch peanuts from packages that arrived here, but you could try Freecycle (ever used it in your area?). We also have a reuse store called Creation Station that sells them. Maybe you have one near you? I couldn’t tell exactly where you’re located…
