My Sensory-Seeking Girl

Today is the 6 month anniversary of the day we held BabyGirl in our arms for the first time - our Forever Family day. It’s hard to believe that the time has flown by so quickly.

Last weekend we had a visit from the social worker to check in on us and write her 6 month post-placement report. Today I have to write a 6 month report of my own, add some photos and mail it in to our agency. This weekend I received a preliminary survey form from a woman who is doing research on “the prevalence of symptoms of sensory processing disorder in children adopted from Guatemala.”

Although I don’t think that BabyGirl seeks sensation to a degree that is disruptive, she scored high on each of the statements keyed for sensation seeking, including:

  • My child enjoys making sounds with his/her mouth.
  • My child finds ways to make noise with toys.
  • My child enjoys looking at moving or spinning objects (for example, ceiling fans, toys with wheels, floor fans).
  • My child enjoys looking at own reflection in the mirror.
  • My child enjoys playing with food.
  • My child enjoys splashing during bath time.
  • My child uses hands to explore food and other textures.
  • My child enjoys physical activity (for example, bouncing, being held up high in the air).
  • My child enjoys rhythmical activities (for example, swinging, rocking, car rides).
  • My child mouths objects.
  • My child licks/chews on nonfood objects.

I was reading that list and was thinking my son dose alot of those things too. Hummmm….

Congratulations!

We are doing are final post-placement reports for Russia in just a few short weeks.

It is amazing how fast time flies, yet I can’t remember life before the Agents either.

I was kinda thinking the list looked like a lot of typical young children. On the other hand, I understand that often they want you to indicate if it is abnormally high. For instance, your pictures of her tasting various unusual things is indicative of a higher than normal oral exploration, probably.

By the way, she is SO adorable!

I think most typical kids do a lot of things on the list, but we were asked to rank them on a scale from “Almost Always” to “Almost Never” where “Almost Always” is described as, “when presented with the opportunity, your child almost always responds in this manner, 90% or more of the time.”

As you can tell from the bizarre pictures, my daughter does almost always mouth or - more often! - LICK new items she’s exposed to and she’s on the high end of the scale for most of those other things too. My son enjoyed most of those activities too but not to the same degree.

Oh my goodness those pictures are so cute!!! She definitely loves tasting everything doesn’t she? lol. She’s adorable and hopefully her brother’s Pokemon cards have not fallen prey to “The Tongue” yet. ;)

She could not be any more gorgeous. :-) Congratulations!
