Unplug Your Kids: Impromptu Food Projects

I’ve been following along with the Unplug Your Kids project themes for a month or two now, and I’m finding that having that theme in the back of my head helps give me a little direction when the kids are looking for something to do during the week. JediBoy asked me on Tuesday if we could do a science project, and so I started thinking of something quick and easy to do with food (color celery). Yesterday afternoon, I went with the kids to cook dinner but it seemed too daunting after an afternoon of springtime play, so I thought of something to fill our bellies for an hour that was fun to do too (fruit loops necklaces and bracelets). This morning, when we looked for an art project to try after breakfast, I turned to the fridge (potato stampers). It’s been fun to have that theme in the back of my head and see how I can use it in our every day play.
Our celery project:
Apr Food Celery 1
We put celery in cups of food coloring and water - two individual stalks in blue and purple, and one stalk cut up the middle, half in pink and half in blue.
Apr Food Celery Day 2 b Apr Food Celery Day 2 a
The purple and blue stalks one day later.
Apr Food Celery Day 2
The pink-and-blue stalk one day later. JediBoy was impressed that the pink color stayed on one side and the blue color stayed on the other.

Fruit loop necklaces:
Apr Food Loops Boy
JediBoy
Apr Food Loops Girl
BabyGirl - my sweet-toothed kid loved this project!

Potato stampers:
Apr Food Potato Cutter
Press a cookie cutter into a cut potato.
Apr Food Potato Knife
Use a knife to cut away the potato from around the cookie cutter.
Apr Food Potato Kids
Stamp and say cheese!

Looks like fun! I’ve never seen the project where you split the celery, that’s cool… we might have to try that.

You have way too much creative energy for me.
What great ideas and the kids are having so much fun!

Looks like fun. I’m going to have to do the fruit loop necklaces with my daycare - they’ll like that.

I agree that the themes really help provide focus for activities during the week. I love these unplugged projects!

The potato stamping looks like so much fun, and what a neat experiment with the celery! How did you make the fruit loop necklaces?

We just thread fruit loops onto shoestring licorice (that we buy in our grocery’s bulk candy section) to make our necklaces and bracelets! It’s extra fun because the kids can eat the “string” too. :-D

I havent done that celery coloring for years. I’d forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. My kids would enjoy that.
I was thinking of doing the potato stamping too!! They came out great!

As usual you have wonderful projects. Your kids are very lucky to have you. I am going to have try the potato stampers for the boys some time, they will love that. thanks :)

I have been doing the same sort of thing (but far less creatively) with the Unplugged themes.

I love the fruit loop jewelery. Chew-lery?

I wouldn’t have thought to use a cookie cutter to make the shape on the potato! What a good idea! And I like those yummy necklaces you made! I think my daughter would like those too!

That celery project is intriguing and I love food prints, too. I can’t believe I totally forgot about food printing since we have done it before. I love using halved cabbage, but also celery would make great little half moon shapes!

Cookie cutters would definitely make life easier than the potato carving that I did! I’ll have to try that next time…although there is a certain charm to four pointed lopsided stars I guess. I had totally forgotten about the celery trick. And I have never seen it done with one stalk split and placed in two colors. Really clever! I think my kids would enjoy that, thanks for the idea!

I love the projects you did! Thanks for sharing!
