Easy Clean-Up Fingerpaint

This morning, BabyGirl was reaching madly for the paints right after breakfast. We decided to indulge in a little fingerpainting! It’s a sensory feeling I love - have you picked up on my habits yet? - but strangely enough, both my kids are just slightly skittish. They will fingerpaint but only if it’s my idea, and only for a little while, not lasting for the pages and pages and pages of artwork they’ll create with brushes.

My “secret” for fingerpaint is to start with washable liquid tempera and add a dash of dishwashing soap to make it both more slippery and easier to clean up.

And also, unless we’re trying for a graphic representation of a mudslide, I only set out three related colors! Today it was blue, green and purple.

JediBoy likes to cover the paper with paint and then rake his fingernails through it. Today he said it was a jungle with vines and roots. He made six different paintings today.

BabyGirl poked at the paint for a while, and then wanted a craft stick (which we had used to stir the soap into the paint). She also painted her belly, legs and lips, the chair and the wall.

Yesterday afternoon we visited Leigh and brought along our wonderfully sticky glue dough. Just a little proof that I can get her kids sticky and messy without a mud puddle!

Call me crazy (plenty do!), but I used to put my kids in the bathtub to finger paint. When they were done, I could take a print of their artwork if I wanted, then simply hose away the mess.
