We finished out PisecoDad’s birthday with two sporting events. First, JediBoy had his “kids’ night out” league. This is a great program run by our town’s rec department for four- and five-year-olds. They meet once a week for six weeks in a local elementary school gym to play games and run off steam. The woman who runs the program is great with the kids and there is a good sense that this is all for fun, and everybody plays without keeping score or competing. They play games like t-ball, kickball, and pillow polo. Last night was pillow polo, which is played like indoor hockey with giant foam sticks and soft balls as pucks. The game gets crazy as, after the kids understand what to do, more balls are tossed out until there are about 10 balls and 16-20 players!
Halfway through the playing time, the teams go out in the hall to get drinks from the water fountain. When the break came, we set down BabyGirl to let her work off a little steam of her own. I snapped this picture, which I just think is hilarious. Look at the little boy next to her - he couldn’t keep his eyes off her the whole time. And she’s so unconcerned!
After pillow polo, we raced across town to catch a local hockey game. The kids had a great time there. BabyGirl loves to watch the mascot, and JediBoy finally caught one of the t-shirts they toss into the crowd between periods.
We love taking advantage of the things our area has to offer. The newspaper is often filled with people ranting about what a “nothing” area this is, and how there is “nothing” to do. But for young families who keep an eye out for opportunities, there is plenty going on!
