Mr. Independent and Gum Time

Usually Mondays are very intense here; I have reserves of energy from the weekend and JediBoy is looking for more one-on-one time. This morning he’s been surprisingly independent - he was awake and talking (telling stories) alone upstairs for at least 45 minutes before he decided to grace me with his presence this morning!

I got out some cards and markers so we could send his knight photos to a few folks, and we worked on that together for a while - he was drawing pictures on the cards, then dictating his (sometimes very lengthy) messages, and then signing his name to the card. When we’d done six of those, he decided he was ready for breakfast.

After breakfast he went to his bookshelf in the living room and stayed there for a good hour, talking to himself - sometimes I’d hear he was telling the story of the book, sometimes quoting from a completely unrelated movie, book or song, and sometimes trying to sound out the words. See? Mr. Independent today.

Finally he came to ask for “gum time” so we hung out in his playroom. He’s been so focused on the written word lately that I’ve been trying to give him lots of opportunities to read new things. I wanted him to read two pages in the orange HOP workbook, and he did about eight. Then I gave him some words to spell on his white board - crab, drum, trip, etc. - using the blends he’d been reading.

We snuggled on the couch (is it cold everywhere today?) and read together. I pulled out ten books - five for him to read to me, and five for me to read to him. We took turns reading and listening.

He read:
The Fat Cat Sat on the Mat by Nurit Karlin - I picked it up at a yard sale this weekend so he’d never read nor heard this one before
Cat and Mouse, Cat Bath, and Where Is Tabby Cat? by Phyllis Root - these are from the Brand New Readers series and he had read them all before, but not recently
Red Cat, White Cat by Peter Mandel - a hardback picture book - he was tripped up on the unexpected pairing of thin and stout but he loved the pictures. I’m trying to ease in more picture books so that he can read to baby when she comes.

I read:
One Kitten for Kim by Adelaide Hall - this old picture book has always been one of his favorites - a boy is asked by his parents to give away six kittens (and keep just one). He does give the kittens away, but he gets animals in return, so he comes home with two fish, a parrot, a puppy, a rooster and a chameleon!
The Cat Barked? by Lydia Monks
Bark, George by Jules Feiffer
Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School by Mark Teague
Animals should definitely not act like people. by Judi Barrett
