Baby’s First Beakers - Or, Happy Labor Day

So when Labor Day Larry came to our house (What?! Labor Day Larry doesn’t bring gifts to your house? What a shame!) he brought our little scientist a gift basket from Steve Spangler Science. The gifts included the Mix & Measure Kit (six big test tubes in a rack, five plastic pipettes, three 250 ml beakers and three 650 ml beakers, plus a liter soda bottle), two Color Mixing Trays and a bag of 100 Fizzy Tint Color Tablets. I especially love the indestructible test tubes that Steve Spangler calls Baby Soda Bottles.

The scientist in JediBoy was thrilled and immediately asked to “do some experiments.” First, I put plain water in a beaker and showed him how to use the pipettes, and let him work on that to be able to control the amount of water going in the tray.

When he tired of that, we broke out the Fizzy Tint tablets and made 100 ml each of red, blue and yellow water, so that he could start mixing colors.

Not only did he explore mixing lots of colors (today he had a passion for using all three primary colors in one compartment)…

…but he also explored just how full he could fill each compartment…

…leading to a cool discussion about surface tension!

We’ve also seen a pileated woodpecker, a family of young robins out looking for food together, and a pair of goldfinches eating from the flowers outside our office window. And the day has barely begun!

The kit looks really cool. Is Labor Day Larry a friend or fairy? Perhaps I should have prepared a gift. I’m sad to say that today is like any other because my dh thought that going into the office and working would be a great way to spend Labor Day. Believe it or not there are several others doing the same at his office.

Labor Day Larry is a fairy of ours, not unlike the Memorial Day Moose or the Fourth of July Firecracker! We love to celebrate. :)

This is such a neat way to get a kid interested in chemistry! I am definitely going to go browse through that Steve Spangler site.

Pileated Woodpeckers are awesome birds. We had one visiting us early this spring, and they are just enormous.

How lovely to discover someone else who loves Steve Spangler Science! We signed up for his Experiment of the Week and since then, there has not been a single boring weekend in our house! Right now, we’re busy blowing the faces out of watermelons, to practice for October when we’ll be blowing the faces out of pumpkins. So much fun! He’s got a 4th of July theme on his blog right now, and my kids can’t WAIT to try the color-stacking thing he’s demonstrating on there. Don’t you love how most of his experiments can be done with stuff you’ve already got in the pantry? So inexpensive and fun!
