Around mid-morning, JediBoy decided to dress and go outside. He wore his “scientist” vest and asked to take his backpack and my camera. I asked him why he wanted the camera, and he told me “I want to take pictures of wild animals.” I laughed a little to myself, and told him if he spotted any wild animals that I would come out and take pictures.

He enjoys making me eat my words.
We did call the local police department, because this little guy was out during the day and seemed to be walking a little funny, and was seeking us out rather than running away. An officer (who we know through his wife who works with PisecoDad) came and the dispatcher spent some time calling wildlife rehabbers, vets and the zoo. No one would take the baby without knowing for certain that the mother was killed by a car - too much danger of rabies. Since no one would take the baby, and he wasn’t showing strong signs of having rabies, the officer was directed to release him in the trees across the street, where he first emerged.
As we were waiting for responses from all the phone calls, though, Officer W. scooped the raccoon up with our snow shovel and deposited him in a bin. He could almost climb out, but not quite. We watched him for a long time, then said our goodbyes.
