I thought yesterday was tough. Today was tougher, because we were all tired and cranky. Any day where I cry so hard it makes me throw up ranks right up there on the list of all-time bad days. I whined to L. about it via email, then shipped the boys off to bowling. (The doctor assured me JediBoy’s not contagious after 24 hours on medicine. And PisecoDad is equipped with the Macho Size vial of Purel.) I was trying to think of something I could enjoy, and decided to make a quick run out to the big box electronics store to pick up a new game (for my DS) which was on sale.
PisecoDad and JediBoy had taken the van, so I hopped in PisecoDad’s car. The first words I heard pumping out of his stereo were…
Life’s not a song. Life isn’t bliss. Life is just this… it’s living.
Ah, Spike the philosopher. But that cheered me right up. Life isn’t always bliss, but it doesn’t always have to be about feeling blissful.
Today I got to see JediBoy rapturously pick his current favorite outfit from a basket of clean laundry. I will post a picture sometime so you can fully appreciate this, but for now you’ll have to imagine: his current favorite outfit is a set of child’s scrubs in a lush green tropical print, covered with big lizards. I found them at the thrift store about a month ago, and he is In Love with them.
ETA:

Once he was suited up, he put a pencil in the shirt pocket and asked me to help him find a notebook small enough to fit. I am a scientist who studies animals.
How can I not smile?
He played with the hose outside my (prudently closed) window later in the day. Last year he was still a little fearful of the powerful spray. This summer, he delights in it.
JediBoy begged me to hang out in bed with him and finish watching The Sound of Music. Every time the Reverend Mother appears, he asked me Who’s that man? When Maria and the Captain meet in the gazebo at night, JediBoy peered intently at the screen and asked Where’s the telegram boy?
How can I not laugh?
JediBoy’s days are filled with snippets of song. Today’s were mostly…
I’m sailing up a creek all the way to Mozambique… (Trout - Sailing)
and…
Oh I ain’t got a barrel of money… (from my concert - Side By Side)
I guess they’re not wealthy sailors?
JediBoy brought me a flower to put in a vase by the computer. He worked on his loomed hat. He held me when I cried and then put on his Jim Weiss King Arthur cd. VERY LOUD. So I wouldn’t have to think about sad things anymore.
He’s always there to bring me back from despair. (Cue spooky voice, as in Shadows Over Camelot: DESPAIR!)
