Magic Tree House Morning

When JediBoy came downstairs this morning, he was telling me (quite calmly!) about a dream he’d had where he and I were chased and eaten by a T. Rex. So I said, “Boy, that would be scary! I’m sure glad we weren’t really chased by a T. Rex.” To which he could only reply:

Mom! There aren’t really dinosaurs in our world today!

Well. Duh. So we started talking about whether or not it is possible to time travel to the age of dinosaurs. This led me across the room to pick up the first Magic Tree House book - Dinosaurs Before Dawn. When I finished (these books are early chapter books which have around 66 pages and take about 45 minutes to read), JediBoy immediately asked for another.

We’ve been reading MTH books since the summer he was 3 and deeply involved in Ancient Egypt. We started with #3, which is Mummies in the Morning. That was the first whole chapter book I ever read him, and the first time I read it with him was by the train table at the bookstore. I was really just showing it to him to see if he would be interested enough in it for me to buy it. He demanded that I finish it then and there! Naturally, we bought a copy and he wanted to hear it at least once a day for about two months.

Over time, we’ve slowly collected a big chunk of the series (there are over 30 titles now), but we’ve read them out of order and only when interest leaned toward a particular subject. So when JediBoy asked for another one this morning, I suggested we move on to #2, The Knight at Dawn. Not enough to satisfy him, we stayed on the couch to finish Mummies in the Morning and Pirates Past Noon as well. It was fun that his four biggest passions came in these four books… so three hours later, my voice sounds like a cheese grater (didn’t help that I had to talk like the pirates in #4) but he is happy.

Yes, they did seem to pack some of the biggest “boy” passions into that book series. We’re currently reading Dingoes Down Under.

Wow, I can’t believe tha you guys can/will actually sit and read that many books in a row. My kids love MTH books, but they still don’t wan to sit through a whole book in one big chunk. I think our biggest challenge with Winterpromise this year is going to be the read-alouds. They LOVE stories, but not always listening to me read as much as I want to read.

My Jonathan, who just completed 1st grade, is rapidly devouring the MTH books. We’ve read several aloud, too, when they have coincided with our science and history studies.

JediBoy has always had a long. Long. Long. attention span for things like this. As a matter of fact, after a grocery run and making lunch, he watched one episode of Magic School Bus, then asked (begged) for #5 (Ninjas). And after we made dinner together (a pasta salad, so we made it early and then chilled it) he “needed” #6 (Amazon).
