Sounding Out (Inappropriate) Blends!

JediBoy has been in love with YouTube since Tuesday’s arrival of a new computer that has functional sound.  The two things he most likes to watch are Sesame Street clips, especially Kermit’s News Flashes about stories he knows, like the Elves and the Shoemaker, and various Lego Star Wars clips, particularly this one.

Yesterday he found a Lego clip that was not in English - might have been German, but I wasn’t paying particularly close attention. At the end, the credits rolled in big yellow letters, and then the letters SLUT came up and stayed on the screen for a long moment.

Yes, you can see what’s coming, I then heard my tiny boy’s whisper across the room…
sss-lll-uh-tt… slut!

I wanted to congratulate him on sounding out a blend I’d never heard him attempt before, but then…  I just let it be.

On a lego clip? Good grief! It’s like someone is trying to corrupt our children :( That is disappointing, but I think you handled it great.

Well, I wasn’t so upset about that, since it wasn’t in English… I don’t think the word “slut” was put there to corrupt our English speaking children! Just one of those lost-in-translation moments… :)

A little time to tinker online has taught me that SLUT means closed / finished / at an end in Swedish… in other words, THE END!

Well, at least now he knows a useful word to go with BR-IT-NEY when he’s done sounding that one out.
