Resource HELP - Soldiers / Military History

Okay, here’s my request: I need resources (online, in print, etc.) for my 4.5 yo son that deal with soldiers / arms / military history.

At lunch today, JediBoy said to me, “Mommy, after lunch, let’s do some EXPERIMENTING.”

Me: “Sure, babe. What kind of experiment would you like to do?”

JediBoy: “I want to learn about hunters, all about hunters, like how they got their guns and why they fight.”

Okay, it helps to know that a couple of months ago his uncle was thinking about enlisting in the Marines, and JediBoy has taken to calling soldiers/military folk “hunters.”

I think he’s most curious about the actual manufacture of guns and other weapons as well as individual stories about soldiers, and why people decide to become soldiers. He likes factual information delivered with a lot of extra flair (cartoons, comics, movies, games) or written as historical fiction (a la Magic Tree House). I promised him that tonight we could start looking on the computer for information but a quick Google search is hard to do on this topic and have information come up that’s geared for early primary!

I’d love a Mister Rogers-style mini-documentary (you know, what he plays on Picture Picture!) on the manufacture of guns; a short novel written around the Magic Tree House level about a soldier in any war; a website that shows soldiers from several wars and maybe has some online games (dress the soldier?). Anyone?

I have found that wikipedia.org does a good job explaning things. I would start there! :)

Also our good friend Mel would be a very good person to ask about this stuff. Most of the games that we play way back when had alot of information about all aspects of war and stuff. He would know the best books to get and witch ones were are factualy correct.

You mean the uncle with the tattoos, right, not the uncle I went to high school with? I can’t picture THAT uncle as a Marine. I just can’t.
