I can’t even blog about our day on Saturday without feeling completely spent.
The alarm went off at 7:30; I had to wake both PisecoDad and JediBoy and help them find clothes, get dressed (well, not PisecoDad so much) and get ready for the day. At 8:15, JediBoy and I were out the door to soccer. He had pictures at 8:30 and a game from 9-10. The game was great - the “core” six kids showed up for the game and they were really getting into it. JediBoy played goalie for a good chunk of the first half and the change in two weeks is incredible. He was not distracted, stayed focused on the ball, and actively went for the ball whenever it came inside the box. He didn’t allow a single goal and he was having the time of his life!
We went from there over to Uncle J’s old apartment and helped load up the vehicles and clean up. Then all six vehicles drove the mile or so to his new place and we helped with unloading and unpacking from about 11:00 until 1:45, when we left, muddy and sweaty, for our friends’ baby shower. I had a very nice time at the shower, especially since there was another boy there for JediBoy to play with, and the two of them disappeared and carried on alone together for most of the time.
We stayed well past the 4:30 ending time given on the invitation, since these are our closest friends and we know their families too, sat around chatting and letting the boys keep playing. Around 7:00 the boys finally had a falling-out, disagreeing and telling each other they weren’t going to be friends any more (both were just exhausted, I’m sure you know how that gets). Then PisecoDad told me that Aunt B and Uncle J wanted to go out to dinner with us, so we left to meet them at one restaurant, frantically talking about Star Wars to keep JediBoy’s eyes from closing on the drive there… only to find out that we’d have a half hour wait for a table, so it was back in the van and more Star Wars talk to drive to a diner nearby where we could be seated right away.
JediBoy perked up when we got to the diner, and even though I was the one to spill a glass of ice water over the table, we had a nice relaxing meal. Home from there, and JediBoy had his second wind, so he and PisecoDad played Nintendo for about half an hour before heading up to bed.
I’d developed an awful headache and had to take some Excedrin to get it to stop - Excedrin, of course, has caffeine, so I was wide awake. PisecoDad and I cuddled in bed watching Angel until around 1:00. He drifted right off to sleep and I dozed, listening to a book on CD. Before 2, JediBoy got up to pee and came in our bed, but once he was there I couldn’t sleep because he was coughing… and that Mom-radar kicked in - it was the cough of someone who has a hair tickling his throat and may gag trying to get it out. So I was on edge, watching and listening to him cough, relax, and then cough a while more. I brought in a pile of old towels and a fresh pair of pj’s just in case, and then listened to a LOT more of the book on CD while I watched him sleep.
I got to sleep around 4:30.
And was woken up Sunday morning at 8:00 by JediBoy calling up the stairs that he hadn’t gotten to the toilet in time (he started antibiotics on Friday but since we were away from home he didn’t get any yogurt at all on Saturday) and could I help him clean up and bring him clean undies. Blech. But of course you can’t waste any time in a situation like that so I popped out of bed to help him - then was so awake that I couldn’t get back to sleep.
Needless to say, the rest of Sunday was pretty much a blur. The boys played a lot of Lego Star Wars and I read the papers, watched a movie, and stared off into space a lot, unable to lull myself back into sleep. We went to bed extra early last night and I’m feeling at least human today.
JediBoy is asking me: “Can we be scientists and dig up some not-meat-eating dinosaurs that still have living parts in them and then make some real plant-eating dinosaurs?”
Somewhere along the line I think PisecoDad and I told him the basic plot line of Jurassic Park, and talked about DNA and cloning, and now he wants to try this but with a “safe” dinosaur. Just so we’re clear, though, he’s not asking to pretend this or play-act it. He really wants to go outside with a shovel and try to find some dinosaur bones that contain clone-able DNA.
