HSJ Introduction
Welcome to a New Year’s Resolution! Starting a blog here is something I’ve wanted to do, and this seemed like a good time to do it. I’ve posted over at LiveJournal for several months, but found myself often coming to HSJ to read. The decision to start posting most of our homeschooling adventures here was a simple one, but getting started took the nudge of New Year’s.
So who am I, anyway? I’m the mama. I don’t choose to have any career besides being with my kids, homeschooling them and experiencing life as it goes by. I’m lucky that my husband has had enough promotions and raises at work that we’re able to do this!
Right now we have one son, JediBoy, who is 4 1/2. I’ve tried calling him by his initial over at LiveJournal but always have to catch myself from typing out his full name, so I’m following an HSJ tradition to give him a nickname of his own. He is, as you can guess, deeply interested in Star Wars.
We are also in the middle of adopting GuateGirl, a baby born in November in Guatemala. If we’re lucky, she’ll be home with us in May or June.
I’m an unschooler at heart. I see with JediBoy that he learns an incredible amount from experiencing life on his own terms, and I don’t want to interfere with his natural learning process. I do step in with careful suggestions when I see he wants to do something and is struggling; right now his struggles are mainly about whether or not he wants to try to read. I also love to do projects and celebrate holidays and try out interesting ideas… so it means I do a lot of very creative strewing, sometimes jotting down ideas on the weekend and then suggesting them as JediBoy is searching for a new activity, sometimes just starting something myself and feeling him drawn closer by the irresistable aura of the fascinating.
